“The making of the quilt was incited by an incident she suffered [at the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement], when registering to vote was enough to cost this African American woman her job in a school kitchen. The bitterness of that experience still burned years later, and fellow quiltmakers urged her to express the pain through her art. Worked in the colors of the American flag, the quilt cries freedom.”
